A bit of a disappointing week, book wise. Only one purchase, but what a gem: a book of polaroid photographs taken in downtown Manhattan, 1976 – 1992 by a fashionista called Maripol.
I can’t say I’ve heard of Maripol, but the photos are fantastic, the slimy sheen of the polaroids perfectly enhancing the ‘vixens and rascals and sirens and scamps’ of the New York fashion/ art world. Here’s Madonna, and there’s Grace Jones. Keith Haring – check; Debbie Harry – check. Jean Paul Gaultier – check. They’re all here and looking GLORIOUS and yet oddly innocent:
Even those people you’ve never heard of have that intoxicating aura of stardom.
What a glorious, glamourama of a book – and all for £1.50! Hurrah!
